International Museum Day, it’s now!

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) established International Museum Day in 1977 to increase public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society. In 2012, International Museum Day garnered record-breaking participation with over 32,000 museums hosting events in more than 130 countries.

This year, the International Museum Day (IMD) theme is “Museums (Memory + Creativity) = Social Change”. Reconciling their traditional mission of conservation with the creativity that is necessary for their revival and the development of their audiences – this is the evolution that museums are trying to undertake, with the strong belief that their presence and actions can transform society constructively.

Cena ČV ICOM - Gloria musaealis 2012 Památníku Lidice za stálou expozici Lidické sbírky

Na dnešním slavnostním vyhlášení cen XI. ročníku Národní soutěže muzeí Gloria musaealis 2012 udělil Český výbor ICOM cenu Památníku Lidice za Stálou expozici Lidické sbírky. "Nová expozice řeší původní nevyhovující podmínky pro vystavení cenných exponátů, které se v Lidické sbírce nacházejí. Jedná se jak o standardizované klima, tak například o částečně oddělené prostory s odpovídajícím světelným režimem pro vystavení děl na papíře, která tak mohoubýt v pravidelných intervalech obměňována (velkou část Lidické sbírky totiž tvoří kresby, grafiky a fotografie, které dříve ve stálé expozici nemohly nalézt uplatnění). Výhodou je rovněž snížení počtu vystavených exponátů, čímž se rozšířil prostor pro vnímání jednotlivých děl. Některá význačná umělecká díla, nejcennější sbírkové předměty, dostala v architektonickém řešení samostatný prostor pro svoji prezentaci (např. Gerhard Richter, joseph Beuys, Hans-Peter Alvermann). Mezi autory, kteří jsou nově ve stálé expozici zastoupeni, je možné zmínit H.P. Alvermanna, Georga Herolda, Martina Honerta, Inge Mahna, Raimunda Kummera apod. Pro účely zprostředkování okolností vzniku a historie sbírky byl natočen dokumentární film. Přestavbou rovněž vznikl nový, stavebně oddělený prostor, kde je možné prezentovat nové akvizice." Z textu publikace soutěže. Kurátorka expozice Luba Hédlová také prozradila, že v horizontu dvou let by měl být připraven reprezentativní kalatog Lidické sbírky. Její další snahou je oslovovat současné umělce, aby se darováním uměleckého díla do sbírek muzea připojili k protestu proti bestiálním zvůlím a násilí ve světě. Lidická sbírka v datech 1966 - Barnett Stross vyzval umělce celého světa, aby u příležitosti nadcházejícího pětadvacátého výročí lidické tragédie vyjádřili protest proti bestiální zvůli a násilí, a to darováním uměleckého díla 1967–1969 - 264 umělců z 28 zemí světa zaslalo téměř 350 prací. Velkou kolekci děl západoněmeckých tvůrců získala sbírka díky berlínskému galeristovi René Blockovi. 1967 - Lidická sbírka ve správě Středočeské galerie, později Českého muzea výtvarného umění v Praze 1997 - René Block uspořádal další sbírku obrazů mladých německých tvůrcu, která byla vystavená v Domě U Černé Matky Boží pod názvem Pro Lidice. 2003 - rekonstrukce kulturního domu v Lidicích pro účely prezentace sbírky Lidická sbírka je otevřená sbírka. Vedení Památníku Lidice usiluje o její další rozšiřování a tím i šíření idee Barnetta Strosse. Čestnými členy poradního sboru pro Lidickou sbírku jsou: René Block, Robert Fleck, Edith Jeřábková, Jiří Kovanda, Lórand Hedgyi, Charlotta Kotik, Jiří Ševčík, Marek Pokorný. Día Internacional de los Museos 2013

Estimado miembro,

Desde 1977, el 18 de mayo se celebra el Día Internacional de los Museos (DIM), para concienciar al público en general sobre el papel de los museos en el desarrollo de la sociedad.

Para este 18 de mayo de 2013 el ICOM está haciendo todos los preparativos necesarios para el evento. El tema para este año es: " Museos (memoria + creatividad= progreso social)". A fin de poder comunicar sobre el DIM 2013 de manera más eficiente, el ICOM está difundiendo el programa general de actividades de cada museo participante. Para ello, elICOM Dominicano (ICOM-DO) está recopilando los programas de actividades previstas para el DIM 2013 por los museos miembros en la Republica Dominicana.

Abú Dhabi, neúspěšný kandidát na pořádání generální konference ICOM 2016, připravilo ochutnávku z připravované pobočky Louvre

Abú Dhabi, neúspěšný kandidát na pořádání generální konference ICOM 2016, připravilo už druhou ochutnávku budoucího muzea Louvre, která bude otevřená v roce 2015. Výstava s názvem Zrození muzea představuje předměty, které se v budoucí pobočce Louvru objeví. Muzeum se bude nacházet v muzejní čtvrti-ostrově Saadiyat. Kromě Louvru zde budou další kulturní instituce: Národní muzeum šejka Zayeda (Foster and Partners), Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, kulturní centrum (Zaha Hadid), Námořní muzeum (Tadao Ando) a mnoho dalších. Architektem Louvre Abu Dhabi je Jean Nouvell a inženýr Buro Happold. Poprvé se muzeum představilo v roce 2009 výstavou "Talking Art: Louvre Abu Dhabi". Mezi 19-ti představenými exponáty byl Mamelucký korán ze 14. století, Madonna s dítětem od Belliniho, Kompozice mordé, červené, žluté a černé od Pieta Mondriana z roku 1922. Velkorysá koncepce muzejního ostrova Abú Dhabí je v současnosti největším počinem v oblasti podpory muzejnictví na světě. Generální zasedání ICOM 2019 bude nepochybně tam. Přípravný výbor se zatím vypořádává s přemrštěným rozpočtem a některými problémy s organizací.

Grace Morley Research Fellowship awarded to five ICOM members

Following the announcement in 2012 that the Grace Morley Research Fellowship would fund the participation of ICOM members from the Asia-Pacific region in the ICOM triennial General Conference, 16 applications were received by 28 February, 2013. The selection was based on merit and took into account criteria such as professional background, motivation and expected outcome from participation in the General Conference. The applicants’ involvement in ICOM International Committees is also valued. The fellowship will cover the return airline ticket and daily expenses of awardees. It is expected that their participation in the General Conference in Rio this year will provide opportunities to enrich their ongoing research work through global interaction with ICOM members from different parts of the world. The ICOM India Trust was founded in 1998 by ICOM India members with funding coming exclusively from India. The Grace Morley Research Fellowship, awarded by the Trust, is in memory of Grace McCann Morley, a US-born founder member of ICOM in Paris in 1946, and who spent the last two decades of her life in India working to develop the museum profession in Asia. Fellowships were awarded in 2001, 2004, 2007 and 2010 for participation in ICOM General Conference and have so far allowed some 20 members from the region to participate in the ICOM General Conferences, which take place in different parts of the world.

International Museum Day 2013: museums all over the world have the place of honour

The theme: Museums (Memory + Creativity) = Social Change The theme of the International Museum Day 2013, Museums (Memory + Creativity) = Social Change, aims at showing that the richness of our historical heritage, preserved and displayed by museums, together with the inventiveness and vitality that have characterised the museum sector’s action in recent years, are where the strength of museum institutions lies today.
This truly optimistic theme in the form of an equation dynamically gathers several concepts that are essential to define what a museum is today, highlighting the universal nature of those institutions and their positive influence on society. Activities around the world
Museums take advantage of the International Museum Day to meet their public and organise original activities. For instance:

In Canada, the Bank of Canada’s Currency Museum offers to gather around collections brought in by the visitors;
In Nigeria, objects from the reserves of the National Museum Lagos will be displayed in the museum courtyard on 20 May. The next day, a conference on the IMD theme will be animated by a museum professional, followed by a traditional dance show and a theatre play performed by the museum staff;
In Mexico, the Museo de la Luz in Mexico City organises the reading of tales in the museum’s rooms, spectacular demonstrations on the use of lights, a science rally and a conference on the theme “The Scientific Culture in Museums and the Informal Education”.

Partners
Since 2011, ICOM patronizes the European Night of Museums, which is held every year on the Saturday closest to the International Museum Day. In 2013, both events will coincide since the European Night of Museums will take place at the same time as International Museum Day, on Saturday, May 18.
On the occasion of the International Museum Day 2013, ICOM is partnering with the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2012.
Finally, the European Museum Forum (EMF) will grant the European Museum of the Year Award on May 18, 2013, in the Gallo-Romeins Museum of Tongeren (Belgium), within the frame of a partnership with ICOM.
