For the first time in its history ICOM was part of the World Expo organised from 1 May to 31 October, 2010 in Shanghai, China, on the theme “Better city, better life”.
ICOM’s Pavilion “Museums, Heart of the City” is situated within the International Organisations Joint Pavilion and it represents the global museum community and the challenge it has to face.
Each month, some museum professionals propose for the Chinese audience, activities in relation with the temporary exhibitions that highlight a region of the world through five themes: Museums and Culture, Museums and Society, Museums and Economy, Museums and Innovation and Museums and Environment.
ICOM’s Honour Day at the World Expo took place on May 18, 2010 on International Museum Day.
Today more than ever, museums are at the heart of cultural, social and economic issues in contemporary societies. ICOM’s Pavilion aims to raise the visitors’ awareness of how important museums are by highlighting their role within the city and discussing general interest subjects like science, technology and culture. “Museums, Heart of the City” shows the interdependence and the interaction between the museums and the city through five elements: culture, society, innovation and environment.
ICOM’s Pavilion “Museums, Heart of the City” is situated within the International Organisations Joint Pavilion and it represents the global museum community and offers a museum-related experience to the visitors of the World Expo.
The pavilion includes a space for the permanent exhibition and another one for temporary exhibitions. This distribution allows the visitors to discover the diversity of the museums worldwide as well as ICOM’s missions.
The visit ends with the Chinese video director Hu Wei’s installation.
Every month, ICOM’s Pavilion proposes a temporary exhibition that highlights a region of the world. The visitors will discover many destinations (Europe, Africa, North America, Latin America and the Caribbean, Oceania and Asia) to learn more about different cultures of the world through entertaining and educational activities organised at ICOM’s Pavilion.
