***** ICOM-Italy felt the necessity to provide Italian museum professionals with a handbook covering museum security principles. Therefore the Italian National Committee of ICOM encouraged the publication of a translation into Italian of the ICMS handbook edited by David Liston and published in English in 1993 by Routledge. This book is a useful guide to help resolve museum security problems on the practical level as well as on a theoretical level. It is an essential tool for museum professionals whatever size and type of their museums. Carlo Teruzzi, editor of the Italian version, is a specialist in security problems and over the last years he worked a lot in the museum sector. In some cases he adapted the text to the Italian situation which may differ from the situations described in the original version.

Abstract: In August and September 2002, devastating floods struck Central Europe (Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic), and other recent disasters also indicate the topicality of the theme of Museum Security and Disaster Preparedness. The papers delivered review the types of disasters threatening cultural heritage, whether natural (fire, floods, earthquakes, etc.) or man-made (theft, looting, vandalism, war, terrorism).

Abstract: In April 2001 an international congress on "Catastrophes and Catastrophe Management in Museums" was held in Sarajevo, where the damages of war were still present. The papers are written either in English, Bosnian or German, but in any case the abstract was translated into all three languages. Although most reports concentrate on the events and damages during war, many of these contributions can also be regarded as a cry for help to the international museums community. The other papers give guidelines how to cope with disasters such as earth quakes, floods and fire, and how to rescue and restore the affected museums collections. It soon becomes evident, that a "golden rule" of catastrophe management cannot be presented. An individual emergency plan has to be developed for each museum giving account to the specific nature of both building and collection. The papers in this volume provide significant aid in fulfilling this task. And they remind you that it does not take a river to produce a flood: A broken water pipe can have quite the same effects!
