L'ICTOP a pour objectif de promouvoir la formation professionnelle et d’établir des "normes" applicables au personnel de musée tout au long de leur carrière. Le comité édite régulièrement l'International Directory of Museum Training ainsi qu’un bulletin semestriel et organise une réunion annuelle.

L'ICTOP est aussi conseiller au niveau international pour l'établissement de syllabus dans le domaine de la formation et travaille étroitement avec d’autres comités pour atteindre ses objectifs.
