Good news from the Czech Republic

On 9 February, the Director General of ICOM, Dr Anne-Catherine Robert-Hauglustaine, travelled to Prague to attend the ICOM's Czech National Committee General Assembly, followed by a conference on the future of museums. The top-level meeting was held at the Museum of Czech Literature in the Strahov Monastery, one of the oldest in the country.

The meeting was a major event for the local cultural community and was attended by Czech Minister of Culture Daniel Herman and the President of the ICOM Slovakia National Committee. In her speech, the Director General presented the schedule for the 2016 ICOM General Conference and the many events planned to celebrate ICOM's 70th anniversary. She also mentioned ICOM's future collaboration with UNESCO on a recommendation for museums and changes to the definition of a museum, which will be made at the 25th ICOM General Conference in Kyoto in 2019.

The Czech Minister of Culture spoke about the excellent partnership between ICOM and the Czech ministry, with the Czech Republic being one of the founding members of ICOM. Mentioning the ICOM Code of Ethics and the future translation of the UNESCO recommendation for museums, he emphasized how important this long-standing relationship is to the future of museums, monuments and cultural heritage throughout the world. He concluded with the surprise announcement of the Czech Republic's candidacy to host the 26th ICOM General Conference in 2022!
