November 2011 - The awards ceremony for the ICOM Italy prize, Museums of the Year 2011, was held last 29 October in Siena, at the Museum Complex of Santa Maria della Scala.

The awards, now in their second edition, aim to highlight some of the best practices implemented by Italian institutions. Based on the ethical principles defined by the ICOM Code of Ethics for Museums, the awards honour outstanding contributors to museology, including museum institutions and museum professionals.
The selection process was carried out in two phases. The Board of ICOM Italy first established a shortlist and chose two professionals for the Honoris causa Museologist of the Year award. The shortlist was then submitted for the scrutiny of the international jury, chaired by Alberto Garlandini, Chair of ICOM Italy and composed of Manon Blanchette, Chair of ICOM AVICOM; Carol Ann Scott, Secretary General of ICOM MPR; Emma Nardi, Chair of ICOM CECA; and Alessandra Mottola Molfino, Chair of the Board of Arbitrators of ICOM Italy. The jury identified the winners in each section.

The prizes awarded were as follows:
- Honoris causa: Antonio Paolucci, former Minister of Culture and currently Director of the Vatican Museums;
- Museologist of the Year: Gabriella Belli, Director of the Foundation of Civic Museums of Venice;
-Best Communication and Information Technology project: Museo Torino, for its excellent multimedia application for the largest urban eco-museum in Europe
- Best Public/Private Partnership Project: National Museum of Science and Technology (Leonardo da Vinci), Milan, for its nutrition education project in partnership with Expo 2015
- Best Cultural Interpretation Project: Museo delle Trame Mediterranee, Orestiadi Gibellina Foundation, for its achievements in promoting dialogue between the northern and southern shores of the Mediterranean

ICOM President Hans Martin Hinz attended the ceremony, and presented the Honoris causa award.
