Milan, host of ICOM’s General Conference in 2016

During the ICOM International Museum Meeting from 4 to 6 June, 2012, Milan, Italy was selected as the host city for ICOM’s 24th General Conference in 2016.

7 June 2012 - Abu Dhabi (UAE), Milan (Italy) and Moscow (Russia) were the three candidate cities competing to host ICOM’s 24th General Conference in 2016. At the 76th session of the Advisory Committee, the three cities presented their bids with lively films and words.
Ambassador Maurizio Enrico Luigi Serra, Permanent Delegate of Italy to UNESCO, began the presentation of Milan by inviting ICOM participants to Italy in order to discover the country’s 5,000 museums and visit the various cultural heritage sites figuring on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Alberto Garlandini, Chair of ICOM Italy, as a native of Milan, continued the existing presentation of the city and invited ICOM participants to Milan for the ICOM General Conference from 2 to 9 July, 2016. The theme of ‘Museums and Cultural Landscapes’ was suggested, in connection with the city’s rich and diverse cultural scenes.

More than 65% of the ICOM delegates to the Advisory Committee voted a recommendation for Milan. The Executive Council decided to approve the recommendation vote during its 123rd session on 6 June, 2012.
