18 May 2012 - Launch in Bahrain, China and Argentina

This year, Hans-Martin Hinz, President of ICOM, will launch the event from Bahrain, with the visit to the National Museum’s exhibition Tylos: Journey Beyond Life that recounts burial rites and customs in the ancient history of Bahrain. He will then experience the mobile museum Enkiru, an extension of the exhibition specifically for children aged 7 to 11. Finally, he will participate in a workshop devoted to emerging museum professionals organised by the National Committee of Bahrain, in partnership with ICOM Arab.

Meanwhile, the President personally thanked Chinese and Argentine museums by sending them a video, broadcast during the launch ceremonies for International Museum Day in China and Argentina.

Julien Anfruns, Director General of ICOM, has on his side delivered the keynote address yesterday at the conference "Science Museums and New Technologies" organized by the International Committee CECA (Education and Cultural Action) in Rome, Italy. He is also a panelist and keynote speaker at the International Bar Association’s conference about new legal challenges in the art which is taking place at the MAXXI (Museum of the Arts of the XXI Century, Roma).

Active partners
ICOM patronises the European Night of museums, to be held Saturday, 19 May, in the spirit of an entire weekend devoted to museum practices. The CNES-Paris Observatory will offer the opportunity to visit several museums in Europe, offering a modern and original take on museums.

Finally, Museum Together has launched its iPhone application, the first social network for museum visits. On the occasion of International Museum Day, whose theme this year is "Museums in a Changing World. New challenges, new inspirations", inviting us to think about particular opportunities associated with new technologies for museums, ICOM is joining the social network Museum Together, which allows museum visitors to meet and exchange, sparking off or prolonging their experience. This is a way of linking museum practice and new media, and allows museums to establish a privileged relationship with visitors.
