The
major objectives of ICOM in the field of risk management,
as summarized in objective n°. 8 of the Triennial Program
adopted by the ICOM General Assembly in 1998, are as follows:
to disseminate information about the vulnerability of the
world's natural heritage; and to support museum professionals
in situations of armed conflict or natural disaster.
In
order to implement these objectives, ICOM has been fostering
a range of programmes, together with its international committees,
especially ICOM-CC (Conservation), ICTOP (Training of personnel)
and ICMS (Security).These programmes aim to promote understanding
and awareness of the nature of disasters, and to limit damage
and save cultural heritage through preventive conservation
measures and rapid intervention.
