The Legal Affairs Committee advises ICOM in advancing its knowledge, expertise, and capacity for informed action on increasingly complex legal and intellectual property issues within the community. The Committee works for ICOM's mission, objectives and interests. The members of the Committee are designated by ICOM’s President, serve a three-year term and work under the president’s authority. The objectives of the Legal Affairs Committee are as follows:

  • Advise the Executive Council on legal themes concerning the governance responsibilities of ICOM and the wider cultural heritage sector.
  • Seek reports from the task forces on ICOM Committees to improve the Executive Council's understanding of legal and property issues.
  • Provide considered, informed opinions to assist ICOM to act wisely in legal respects, and in certain cases, pursue a strong public position on legal issues affecting museums;
  • Advise ICOM on legal issues arising in terms of cultural property issues, intellectual property policy developments, and new technologies.
