Synopsis: The British Museum is undertaking a large redevelopment of its collection with the building of a new conservation and exhibition centre which will also house new conservation and science facilities and modern storage for the ethnographic collections that have been stored off-site. Objects in the off-site store are being condition-assessed, treated where necessary, prepared and packed to be housed in the new building. Due to time restrictions, conservation treatment was kept to a minimum. The article presents two case studies concerning canoes. The conservation project is nearing completion.
