General Conferences ICOM Kyoto 2019 | Newcomers session & Mentoring sessions

During ICOM Kyoto 2019, sessions will be dedicated to Newcomers and Young members.

What is the purpose of the welcome session for newcomers?

The welcome session is open to all new ICOM members who wish to know more about our international organisation, together with its institutional processes, missions and activities.

With more than 43,000 members, 120 National Committees, 30 specialised International Committees and six Regional Alliances, ICOM is the only global network open to all museums and museum professionals, regardless of their function or area of specialisation. It offers many opportunities for experience sharing and skill exchange.

The ICOM secretariat, and in particular the Membership Department, plays an important role in coordinating and consulting within the network: in a way, it is the institutional ‘toolbox’ of ICOM. If the membership criteria are common to the entire organisation, each National Committee must implement them according to its own professional context.

The development strategy of our international organisation is twofold: 1) to promote ICOM membership as a label of excellence and strengthen its representativeness by encouraging the institutional membership of museums and the member participation to the work of the thematic International Committees; 2) to develop inclusiveness and diversity within ICOM, in particular by supporting members from the underrepresented regions, such as the African continent, as well as young members, professionals or students.

The new members’ commitment within ICOM, in particular the younger ones, is essential to ensure the association’s dynamism and develop innovative projects in areas as important as the safeguard of heritage and protection, the social role of museums in a changing world, and the training of professionals throughout their career.

This newcomer welcome session will offer participants the opportunity to meet and interact with actors of the network, in order to become actively involved in the ICOM community and its National and International Committees.
