History of ICOM

Over the years, ICOM has evolved in accordance with international museum professionals’ needs worldwide, keeping in mind its main mission. More than 60 years after its creation, the organisation continues to represent the global museum community.

Missions and objectives

ICOM is a membership association and a non-governmental organisation which establishes professional and ethical standards for museum activities.

Executive Board

The Executive Board is the elected head of the organisation. Its responsibility is to implement the strategies identified by the General Assembly.

ICOM Committees

The Committees represent museums and professionals within the association and they contribute to the resources and diversity of ICOM.

General Assembly

The General Assembly is the representation of the members and the decision-making body of ICOM that meets every year.

Advisory Council

The Advisory Council is the consulting body of ICOM. It consists of the Chairpersons (or their representatives) of National and International Committees, Regional Alliances, and Affiliated Organisations.
