During ICOM Kyoto 2019, a Workshop will be dedicated to “Curating Sustainable Futures Through Museums”
We did a Q&A with the moderator of the workshop Jenny Newell, Manager of Climate Change Projects at the Australian Museum, and Member of the ICOM Working Group on Sustainability.
WHAT IS THE AIM OF THIS ACTIVITY?
This workshop is for anyone interested in exploring how to ‘power up’ museums and their practices of environmental and social care. Participants will reflect on their own and their museum’s particular ‘superpower’, and how these can be mobilized in the pursuit of environmental and social sustainability, locally and globally.
Using the Sustainable Development Goals as a guide, the workshop will focus on sharing ideas and initiatives, to take the next steps to accelerate the capacity of museums to engage minds, heart and hands in sustainable, responsible action in the world.
WHY IS SUSTAINABILITY IMPORTANT FOR THE FUTURE OF TRADITION?
Tradition and sustainability are interdependent. Traditional knowledge and practices are powerful sources for insights into balanced, sustainable ways of living in our environments. Living sustainably, across all the world’s communities, is the prerequisite for the sustenance of the world’s diversity of cultural practice. Operating at the nexus between tradition, innovation and communities, museums have already achieved so much to nurture sustainable futures but there is much more work to be done.
WHY ATTEND?
As museum professionals, it is encouraging and inspirational to focus on what we can each do to support a sustainable future. Anyone interested in upscaling their own and their museum’s particular ‘superpower’ and their potential contribution to sustainability is welcome to join the workshop.

ICOM KYOTO 2019
Between the 1st and the 7th of September 2019, Kyoto (Japan) will host the biggest and most important conference of museums in the world. More than 3.000 museum professionals and experts from all international backgrounds will participate in this triannual event, the 25th General Conference of ICOM. After 24 successful editions, ICOM’s flagship conference has become a worldwide reputed hub for exchange about the topical issues museums tackle today, as well as the most innovative solutions.
