ICOM and ICOM SUSTAIN are actively championing the role of museums in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while also advocating for a dedicated culture goal in the post-2030 agenda. This dual approach demonstrates ICOM’s commitment to both current and future sustainable development frameworks.
While actively supporting the current SDGs, ICOM is simultaneously advocating for a standalone culture goal in the post-2030 agenda. The Culture 2030 Goal campaign advocates for:
- A stronger place for culture throughout the implementation of the current global development agenda (the UN 2030 Agenda),
- The adoption of culture as a distinct goal in the post-2030 development agenda,
- The adoption of a global agenda for culture.
By engaging in both current SDG implementation and future agenda-setting, ICOM is positioning museums as crucial actors in sustainable development, both now and in the years to come.
What is the Culture 2030 Goal campaign?
The Culture 2030 Goal (#culture2030goal) Campaign is formed by several global cultural networks united to advocate for the role of culture in sustainable development. It is the continuation of the #culture2015goal Campaign, created in 2013 to call for culture to be included in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (and the SDGs) that was adopted in September 2015. The Campaign is focused on the UN System. This includes central organs like the UN General Assembly and Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), as well as agencies with relevant thematic mandates, i.e. UNESCO, UNDP or UN-Habitat.
More information on the Culture 2030 Goal Campaign
The Culture 2030 Goal campaign elaborated a Zero draft of a future Culture Goal. Based on expert inputs and a survey of actors across the field, the draft Goal should allow for a new focus in efforts to ensure that culture takes its place at the heart of development planning.
Including the voice of museums in shaping this proposal is crucial. The ICOM Award for Sustainable Development Practice in Museums, through the engagement it created, demonstrates the valuable efforts of the museum sector in creating a sustainable future. We thus invite you to add your voice to this initiative by participating in the survey.
