Standing Committee On Decolonisation

The Standing Committee on Decolonisation (hereinafter referred to as “SCD”) is a Standing Committee of ICOM to advise the Executive Board and the Advisory Council of ICOM. The SCD assists ICOM in advancing and promoting knowledge, good practices and informed action on decolonisation, cultural rights and inclusion within museums and the global museum community.
The SCD shall notably:
- advise the Executive Board and contribute to the development and implementation of ICOM’s policies, strategies and position relating to decolonisation, including cultural rights and inclusion;
- provide advice and guidance to ICOM in addressing decolonisation within its own institutional practices and governance, and assist ICOM’s bodies, to align their activities with decolonisation-related objectives;
- advise ICOM on methodologies and support the development of tools to promote cross regional dialogue and the exchange of knowledge and good practices on decolonisation within the global museum community, taking into account diverse historical, cultural and regional contexts;
- and increase awareness of evolving issues and debates related to decolonisation affecting museums and museum professionals and inform the Executive Board accordingly.
