The International Council of Museums (ICOM), in partnership with UNESCO, has launched a global survey to better understand how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being used across museums worldwide. Institutions of all types and sizes are invited to contribute by completing the online survey by 21 July 2026.
First announced during the ICOM General Conference last November, this initiative reflects the strengthening cooperation between UNESCO and ICOM on issues related to artificial intelligence. It also represents an important step towards better understanding how artificial intelligence is transforming the museum sector, as well as the opportunities and challenges it raises for museums around the world.
The survey seeks to collect concrete examples and baseline data on how museums are currently integrating AI into their practices. It will also examine how these uses align with key international frameworks, including the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (2021) and the ICOM Code of Ethics for Museums. By capturing diverse perspectives from institutions across different regions and contexts, the initiative aims to identify both emerging trends and critical support needs.
To ensure broad accessibility and global participation, the survey is available in multiple languages. In addition to ICOM’s three official languages (English, French, and Spanish) it is also offered in the six official languages of UNESCO (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish).
Findings from the survey will inform a forthcoming joint UNESCO–ICOM report on AI in museums. This publication will provide an evidence-based overview of current practices, highlight key challenges, and showcase practical case studies from around the world. It will also help inform museum policy development and future capacity building activities by UNESCO and ICOM. ICOM and UNESCO encourage museum professionals globally to take part in this initiative and contribute to shaping the future of AI in the sector. By participating, museums can help ensure that technological innovation supports their evolving role in society while remaining grounded in ethical and professional standards.
