Publishing and Writing Workshop – how to get your work published in scholarly and professional publications

During ICOM Kyoto 2019, a workshop will be dedicated to the topic ‘Publishing and Writing Workshop – how to get your work published in scholarly and professional publications’.

What is the aim of this activity?

The scholarly publishing environment is becoming increasingly complex and competitive, and with the dominance of English, non-native speakers are finding themselves at a disadvantage in the selection process. Our aim with this workshop is to provide museum researchers and professionals with tools to prepare successful proposals, articles and chapters for books and journals that will satisfy editors and peer reviewers alike. The workshop will also help authors to ensure their submissions respect copyright law and meet their employer’s or funder’s criteria. One third of the workshop will be dedicated to English writing skills, providing advice on how to avoid common mistakes and to get your message across accurately.

Our aim with this workshop is to provide museum researchers and professionals with tools to prepare successful proposals, articles and chapters for books and journals that will satisfy editors and peer reviewers alike.

What are the objectives of the Publication Department for the future/ 2020?

The ICOM Publications Department was created in 2015. Since then our main aim has been to enhance the quality of our existing publications and to increase our output to foster knowledge exchange and reflect the diversity of ICOM. In addition to our journal, Museum International, we have published volumes on museum ethics and cultural property protection, and developed two new book series, which will be enriched over the coming years in collaboration with our committees and publishing partners.

We will also continue to identify practical ways of assisting members and committees with their publishing efforts through training and information sessions on ICOM’s publishing guidelines and scholarly publishing in general. In this way, we hope to give a voice to a greater diversity of museum professionals across all continents.

Since then [our creation] our main aim has been to enhance the quality of our existing publications and to increase our output to foster knowledge exchange and reflect the diversity of ICOM.

Why attend this session?

The workshop will draw on the ICOM publications team’s real-life experience of editing an international peer reviewed journal, and our publishing partner, Taylor&Francis, will provide invaluable insights into the selection process, copyright issues and publishing ethics. It will appeal to early career researchers and professionals who wish to add their voice to current museum discourse but need help articulating their message. It will also be useful for more seasoned authors who wish to refresh their writing skills and keep up to date on developments in the scholarly publishing environment. If you would like to contribute to current reflection on the museum profession today, but need help refining your proposal, this workshop is for you!
