When the blast at Beirut’s port ravaged the Lebanese capital on August 4, 2020, several gems of the city’s heritage were left in ruins. Among them, the images of the devastated Sursock Palace shocked the world heritage community.
In the immediate aftermath, ICOM was able to provide support thanks to its Emergency response protocol and the reactivity of local and international partners. This effective, coordinated effort was the topic of the third webinar of our Capacity Building Series, that took place on the November 4, 2020.
Now, thanks to the continued support of ALIPH and local and international partners, the Sursock Palace will begin a new phase in its history, starting a process of transformation into a cultural space and museum.
This ALIPH-ICOM joint webinar will focus on the transformation of privately-owned heritage into private museums and cultural spaces. Mary Cochrane will present the vision for the Sursock Palace Museum and four speakers will present successful projects of such transformation in France, Jordan, the Netherlands, and the UK. The goal of this event is to highlight the difficulties, but also the importance of projects of this kind.
