This year, the ICOM General Conference will be hosted in the birth country of manga, one of the most popular forms of art in the world.
In the panel ‘Possibilities and Impossibilities of exhibiting manga/comic – A comparison between Manga/comic exhibitions in the UK, South Korea, and Japan’, the panellists Nam Jung Hoon (Busan Global Webtoon Centre), Nicole Coolidge Rousmaniere (British Museum), Kazuma Yoshimura (Kyoto Seika University) and Yoo Sookyung (Kyoto International Manga Museum/ Kyoto Seika University International Manga Research Center) will explore the idea of “exhibiting manga/comic” from various perspectives by comparing and discussing previous manga exhibitions in the UK, South Korea, and Japan.
The panellists will discuss representations and collections of original manga scripts, and the challenges and opportunities of manga (manuscript) exhibitions. Starting from the British Museum, which curates manga as art objects in a ‘traditional’ way, the Busan Global Webtoon Center that presents digitalized webtoons, and the project titled ‘Genga’ (Dash) (elaborate reproductions of manga manuscripts), and other numerous research projects that have been carried out by the Kyoto International Manga Museum and the International Manga Research Center over 10 years.
Discussing exhibitionary practices of manga can illuminate the challenges and opportunities faced by museums today, which include the binaries between ‘digital and analog’, ‘popular culture and fine art’, and ‘culture and industry’.

ICOM Kyoto 2019
Between the 1st and the 7th of September 2019, Kyoto (Japan) will host the biggest and most important conference of museums in the world.
