FocusParticipate in the revision of ICOM’s Code of Ethics for Museums!

The Standing Committee on Ethics (ETHCOM) is pleased to announce its third consultation with ICOM membership concerning the revision of the ICOM Code of Ethics for Museums.  The consultation will begin on June 15, 2023 and will extend through October 2023, ending on October 31, 2023. It will request comments on the proposed outline of the revised Code of Ethics.

ETHCOM will work through the National and International Committees, Regional Alliances, and Affiliated Organizations to collect feedback on the outline. Members are invited to participate through their committees, we encourage them to contact their national or international committee, regional alliance or affiliated organization. Members will also be able to attend the webinars that ETHCOM will present during the time of the consultation. The outline will be available through ETHCOM’s page on ICOM memberspace.

The outline of the code was created using the guidance ETHCOM received from its first and second consultations. The results of that outreach are also available on memberspace.  The outline consists of a list of topics and statements relating to those topics.  These were identified by the ICOM membership as important to museum work today. With comments on the outline from the third consultation, ETHCOM will create a draft of the Code of Ethics which will be subject to a consultation in 2024.  ETHCOM expects to have the revised Code of Ethics ready for approval by the triennial meeting in 2025.

The ICOM Code of Ethics for Museums is a foundational document for ICOM.  It is based upon the values that we, as museum professionals, share and that underpin the professionalism of our work. It is important that the revised Code support the work that we do and your responses to the outline we propose will help us ensure that the Code will be useful to museums well into the future.
